About Secure Connections

Scroll Prev Top Next More

This topic explains how data is securely transferred between the Connect source and SpeedLine.

With the prevalence of electronic theft, it is important to make sure that any electronic transaction is as secure as possible. All data that is transmitted from your Connect source to the receiving store must be secure, especially if the data contains customer information.

SpeedLine is compatible with Transport Layer Security (TLS). To secure connections between your Connect source and a SpeedLine system, your Connect source will need to include a TLS client.

Authentication Process Between an SpeedLine Connect Source and SpeedLine

1.Personnel at the receiving store use Store Manager to generate or load a Local Source Certificate for the store, and to generate an External Source Certificate for the Connect source.

2.The External Source Certificate is exported and sent to the Connect source.

3.The certificate is incorporated into the Connect source’s security client.

4.When data is sent from the Connect source to the store, the Connect source and the store use their respective certificates to complete a mutual authentication.

5.Data is exchanged between the Connect source and the store through a secure connection.

Generating the Local Source and External Source Certificates

To establish a secure connection between the store and the external host interface, two security certificates must be used: an External Source Certificate for the external host interface, and a Local Source Certificate for the store. A local self-signed certificate can be generated in Store Manager, or a signed certificate file purchased from a certificate authority can be loaded in Store Manager. The External Source Certificate is generated in Store Manager, and is then exported and sent to the host interface to be implemented into the host's security client.

The certificates are Personal Information Exchange (.PFX) files. The Local Source Certificate contains the certificate and a security key. The External Source Certificate contains the certificate and a copy of the Local Source Certificate without a security key.

When you export the External Source Certificate, it is recommended to protect it with a password.
