In some cases, you may want to automatically add a flat rate or percentage charge to an order. The Gratuity feature allows you to set up charges that are automatically applied to the total owing for a ticket in Terminal.
Unlike tips, gratuities are service charges that are typically not optional. They are often applied to tickets for large dine-in parties to ensure that wait staff receive adequate compensation. For example, you may decide to charge a $2.00 per person flat gratuity rate for dine-in parties of eight or more people.
Note Gratuity monies go to the bank the ticket payment was made to. The money is then typically disbursed to wait staff by a manager. If complying with US tax laws, which consider gratuities to be part of wages, record gratuities given to employees in Terminal by editing the employee's time clock and touching the Additional Payroll button. The additional pay will appear on the Time Clock Edit, Time Sheet, and Pay Period reports. |
To Apply a Gratuity Charge
Caution Changes to gratuity charges should be made only after running day end or before making any sales the next day. |
1.Go to Settings> Money> Gratuity.
2.Select the Charge box to activate the Gratuity feature.
3.In the Caption field, enter the name for the charge that will appear on tickets, for example "gratuity" or "convenience charge."
4.In the Type list, select the type of gratuity charge you want to apply:
•% of gross item sales - calculates the gratuity as a percentage of the amount owing before discounts, taxes, and any miscellaneous charges are applied.
•flat rate - applies a flat gratuity charge to the ticket; this is not based on the ticket amount or number of seats.
•charge per person - Adds a flat dollar rate per seat to the ticket; automatically applied if the # Seats setting is met or exceeded. The charge is not split if the ticket for the table is split.
•% of net subtotal - calculates the gratuity as a percentage of the amount owing after discounts are deducted, and before taxes are applied.
Note Gratuity charges are not split automatically if the ticket for a group is split. You can apply a gratuity to an ticket manually using the Full Review> Options> Gratuity Charge button. |
5.In the Rate field, enter the percentage or dollar amount you want to apply.
6.In the # Seats field, type or select the number of seats at which the gratuity will be automatically applied to tickets. If you want the gratuity to be charged regardless of how many seats are on the ticket, leave the # Seats field set to "0" (zero).
Note To charge gratuities "per person," or based on the number of seats, the # Seats check box in the "Prompt for" area of the Settings> Orders> Order Types> General tab must be selected for the order types you charge gratuities for. |
7.In the Tax Group list, enter the tax group that applies to the gratuity.
8.In the Order Types list, select check boxes for the order types that you want automatic seat-based gratuities to apply to.
Note If you apply a gratuity manually, the percentage or flat rate you set is applied to the ticket, and the # Seats and Order Types settings are ignored. Per person rates cannot be applied manually unless the number of seats for the order has been entered. |
9.On the Edit menu, click Save Changes.
10.Refresh Terminal to make the new charges available.
