Use the procedure below to add a printer to your SpeedLine system.

To Add a Printer to SpeedLine

Note HM

Important Before continuing, make sure that your printer is already configured as a Windows shared printer and that you can print a Windows test page.

1.Go to the Settings> Hardware> Printers icon_printerSetup> General tab.

2.Click the Add button at the bottom of the screen.

3.In the Name field, enter a unique name to identify this printer (e.g., Kitchen or Pizza) and then click OK.

4.Select the Active check box to use the printer after setup.

5.Leave the Default Printer cleared, unless this is your main printer where all printouts that are not assigned a print route (e.g., Day Report, Time Slips, etc.) will print.

Note HM

Note The Default Printer will print all printouts when a print route is not designated. You must designate one of the active printers as a Default Printer, but only one can be designated at a time.

6.Enter the Computer Name and Printer Name (share name) as defined in the Windows Printer Control Panel for the computer hosting the printer.

7.Click the Device tab and select the printer type you have connected in the Device Type drop-down list.

Best Practice HM

Hint  If unsure of your printer model, it is usually shown on the front or bottom of the printer.

8.Determine if your printer has cutting capability, and select the appropriate Cut Type (None, Partial, or Full from the drop-down list (a partial cut will cut the paper most of the way, leaving a small tab still attached to prevent the receipt falling to the floor.)

9.Enter the paper width your printer will use:

If using a ticket printer, most have a standard 3-inch width. Check packaging if you are unsure.

If using a label printer, most have a 4-inch or 4.25-inch width. Check packaging if you are unsure.

If using a Windows printer, set the width you want the final printed area (instead of paper width). Examples:

oIf printing tickets on letter size paper, set the width to 3 inches (typical ticket width).

oIf printing reports to the printer with portrait orientation, set the width to 6.5 (this will give a 1-inch margin on letter size paper).

oIf printing 4.25-inch wide labels, enter "4".

10.Enter the paper height your printer will use:

For rolls, leave the Paper Height set at 0.00.

For Windows printers, enter the Printable Height (excluding margins). For example, for letter size paper, enter "9" to give a 1-inch margin at top and bottom, and for 2-inch high labels, enter "1.75".

For Format 2 labels (4" x 2"), set the Paper Height to 2.

For Format 3 labels (4" x 1.5"), set the Paper Height to 1.5.

11.The alternate printer can be designated in the event that the main printer malfunctions. To avoid any print loss, set up an Alternate Printer to route your tickets to until the printer is serviced. See Assign An Alternate Printer Route.

12.If you have selected a thermal printer as Device Type, under Highlight Style, select an option for highlighting text on the tickets. (If using an impact printer, highlights will be printed in red ink.):

None: the text will not be highlighted.

Bold: the highlighted text will be heavier.

Inverted (only an option for certain models): text will be printed white on a black background.

Note HM

Note What to highlight on the ticket is determined several places in SpeedLine: Ticket Print Options on the Delivery and Presentation tabs (see Format Printed Tickets); on the Printers, Make Routes tab for make tickets (see Set Printer Make Routes and Format Make Tickets); and on the As Item and As Modifier tabs in Menu Designer.

13.Click Edit and select Save Changes.
