Store Manager Help

Units of Measure (UOMs) such as ounces, pounds, boxes, or bottles, are a key element in SpeedLine. UOMs measure the quantity (weight, volume, or "each") of your stock items. Each item you stock has a base stocking unit. Stocking units are normally imported from Menu Designer into Inventory when your Inventory is first set up.The Import Items wizard can help you import items and their stocking units from Menu Designer.

The stocking unit may differ from the units you use to buy the item (purchase units), how you use it in recipes (usage units), or how you count it when you take inventory (count units). If these units are different from the stocking unit, conversions are used to tell SpeedLine how the stocking units relate to other units of measure. There are two types of conversions in Inventory: global and custom.

Global Conversions

Global conversions are common to every item in your Inventory. For example, global conversions could be: 16 ounce = 1 pound, or 1 gallon = 128 ounce. These conversions will always apply, and are not item-specific. Some global conversions (such as pint to fluid ounce) are included in SpeedLine, and it is not necessary to add them. All of the weight and volume units listed in the UOM library include global conversions. However, if you use a unit of measure that is not in the weight or volume sections of the UOM library (or is not spelled exactly as shown in the library) you will need to add a global conversion for it.

Custom Conversions

All units of measure associated with a stock item must convert into the units used for the item's stocking unit. After you import stock items from Menu Designer, Inventory contains the stocking unit (or base unit) for each item. However, the stocking unit for an item is often different from the purchase unit recorded when receiving stock, or the usage unit used in recipes (the item contents recorded in Menu Designer). For SpeedLine to be able to convert between the various units imported from Menu Designer or used in Inventory screens, custom conversions are added on the Stock Items screen.

Custom conversions are item-specific. A case of pizza sauce may contain 10 cans, while a case of tomatoes might contain 14 cans. Each of these stock items would require a different custom conversion to translate from the purchase unit (case) to the stocking unit (can).
